“May I help you young man? You seem a bit…muddled.” A tall, older man with graying hair looked at him questioningly from the end of the search counter. He wore comfortable clothes and glasses, and looked more like one of the library’s patrons than an actual staff member.

“Do you work here?” Questioned Paul, not entirely certain this gentleman was a real librarian.

“I most certainly do. Here’s my name tag…wait a minute!” The man looked down confused and began patting all his pockets until a “Ha!” of triumph sounded and he began affixing a badge reading Bryan onto his shirt. “There we go. And if you have any further doubts you can ask Maya at the information desk.” Maya, who had been observing the entire ordeal, simply smiled and nodded from her post.

“Ok then, well I’m just looking for information, real information, on the Fae. But all I keep running into are fictional books on fairies. What am I doing wrong?”

“Sounds like you’ve started out just right.” Confirmed the librarian as he adjusted his glasses and came to stand next to Paul. “You don’t know a specific book title or author, right? So, a subject search is a good start on the computer, or in this case, an old school card catalogue. The only problem is a subject search will give you fiction and nonfiction results for a topic, and it sounds like you are looking just for non-fiction.”

With a nod from Paul, Bryan began thumbing through the index cards. “Fae is our subject?” Paul gave another nod and watched. “Ah-ha, here we are. Now I still encourage you to look through your results. But this ‘See Also’ notation, indicates this subject goes by a variety of names, this is very useful. See it tells you the other names your subject may go by, giving you other search options. It looks like Fae are also known as Sidhe, Fairies, Sprites, and Wee Folks. It also seems that they are not only found in fiction but also in the mythology of several cultures. Celtic, Germanic and Greco-Roman just to name a few. Very exciting! Would you like me to help you narrow down some options?” Paul couldn’t help but smile at the librarian’s enthusiasm, and soon he found himself elbow to elbow with Bryan scouring the library.
